In conjunction with Parks and Recreation Month during June, the City of Moose Jaw also created a new campagin.

It's called the Tree Value Awareness Campaign, which is meant to detail the significance of trees in our community in a new and exciting way according to Sarah Regent, Parks Gardener for the City.

"It's a little campaign that we're doing, concentrated in the downtown core just to bring awareness to the value that trees have. We've designed tree tags, and we've hung a few around downtown on different trees and they'll have different numbers on them, so some of them have the tree appraised value," explained Regent.

She also noted that some of the featured greenery can cost anywhere between $3,000 to $10,000.

"It's depending on what kind of tree it is and where it's located; we also have some that illustrate the savings in terms of carbon sequestration and reduced reliance on air conditioning, and those kinds of energy saving and storm water management benefits of trees."

But it's not just about dollars and cents. Regent wants residents to appreciate the benefits these trees have on our city and focus on all of their features.

"I think it's really good that people understand the value of trees because I think a lot of the time we sort of take trees for granted. We just see trees there and maybe they're pretty and they offer a bit of shade, but a lot of people don't think beyond that. I think it's really important that people put a little bit of thought into trees, care about them a little more, and maybe put a little more thought into caring about their own trees."
