Getting your kids ready for school can be an expensive process for low-income families. That's why the Moose Jaw Salvation Army is running their annual Backpack to School program to help cover some of the costs.

In total, they hope to provide backpacks and school supplies to 100 low-income families within the community. This is the second year the local organization has run the program and Sonya Bowles, family service coordinator, says it's going to be even bigger this year.

"It is growing in popularity this year. Last year we helped forty-seven children, and our application process runs from the 12th to the 22nd so right now we're at thirty-three children. So we expect it'll pick up a bit more."

Bowles says there's a lot of pressure on kids going back to school and believes that this is a great way to alleviate all that stress.

Earlier in the month, the Salvation Army partnered with Superstore to raise donations in a "cashier-ask" fundraiser. Superstore also gives the organization a discount on all the supplies that they need to fill the backpacks.

"What they've done for us is quite significant. We wouldn't be able to do what we do for the backpack program without Superstore. They help us raise so much money."

Bowles hopes that the program will help set kids off on the right foot for a positive school year.

Families can apply for the program at the Salvation Army office. They must bring with proof of income, proof of address and their child's health card.
