SaskPower is continuing to invest in modernizing and growing Saskatchewan's electricity system.

This year the Crown Corporation has made some major capital investments to keep bringing a safe and reliable supply of power to the province's homes, farms, and businesses.

SaskPower Spokesperson Joel Cherry says, "On a continuing basis, SaskPower invests about one billion dollars into the province's electricity grid. We have a growing population. We have an increased power demand, and we also have an aging infrastructure that we need to address. And so, we 're putting major investments into projects such as The Chinook Power Station."

The six hundred and eighty point five million dollar natural gas-fired Chinook Power Station near Swift Current is on-budget and on-track for commissioning in the fall of 2019, and local suppliers have been awarded approximately one hundred and twenty million dollars in contracts. They will also be building a copy of that facility in Moose Jaw's Industrial Park, and the announcement came just before Christmas.

SaskPower has also started construction of two new transmission lines to bring power from the Chinook Power Station to customers across the province, one of which is located just north of the Friendly City.

Other major capital projects include a power purchase agreement that will see the development of a 200-megawatt wind power facility, and a Transmission Wood Pole Replacement Program and Distribution Wood Pole Remediation Program that will help minimize outages caused by storms.
