Saskpower has announced that it will be launching a revised net metering program.

The update came when an unprecedented demand caused the previous program to hit its 16-megawatt cap two years earlier than projected, SaskPower paused the program to do a review and revise it to ensure long-term financial sustainability.

The changes in the revised program include no limit on program capacity, no program end date, and no specified contract length. With the relaunch of the Net Metering program, there will no longer be a Government of Saskatchewan rebate on capital equipment and installations across the province.

Minister of Environment, Dustin Duncan commented on the new program stating the changes.

"What is changing though is there's not going to be a rebate going forward, we're also ensuring there is no megawatt cap, there is no contract and therefore there is no term on that contract. So this is an indefinite program for people that want to take part."

Duncan added more about the program after two years.

"And the excess credit will be credited back at 7.5 cents per kilowatt-hour for the first two years, after those two years on an annual basis SaskPower will be establishing a tariff that people will then feed into the grid for us."

The changes are set to take effect on November 1st, and people that were in the previous program will be grandfathered under their current contract as long as there are no changes to their projects. Once their contract is up, they will be integrated into the new program.
