Saskatchewan drivers have been smartening up since their high numbers of distracted driving offenses in October. With SGI releasing their numbers for distracted driving offenses in December, Saskatchewan has been on two months straight of low numbers.

A total of 534 distracted driving offenses were made in December, 408 of which being for cellphone use, which was the lowest monthly total in all of 2019, following a trend set in November after Octobers record-breaking numbers. The first 10 months of 2019 had an average of nearly 900 tickets with October breaking the all-time TSS record of 1,290. Decembers numbers were almost half of the average.

However, it is not all good news. There was a total of 295 impaired driving offenses made in December. This largely due to holiday parties and extra diligence from the RCMP and local police forces.

"Police are very focused on catching drunk drivers," said Media Relations Manager with SGI, Tyler McMurchy "Especially in the holiday season with parties and drinking."

McMurchy adds that the fines will increase at the start of February, becoming just over double what they currently are.
