Some hot rods and some hot moves. The 5th Annual Highway to Heroes Car Show is on Sunday at 15 Wing Moose Jaw and the lineup is more than shiny chrome and vibrant paint. In addition to some beautiful vehicles on display, the Canadian Forces Skyhawks and the Snowbirds will be putting on a show.

The Skyhawks are Canada’s only military parachute demonstration team and have been touring the country for over 40 years, performing for over 75 million people. A high level of skill and attention to detail sets these jumpers apart from the rest, bringing cheers and some gasps from their audiences each time.

On Friday though, they gave DiscoverMooseJaw.com's Chris Rasmussen an offer he couldn't refuse. A one-way ticket to 12,500 feet above the Friendly City with only a parachute and Sgt. Johnny Shaw to get him back to the ground safely. Needless to say, he jumped at the opportunity.

"I joined the military as a supply technician and it was a bit slow for me. I was young and wanted to do something more exciting," explained Shaw as the pair got ready to hit the skies. "I found out that I could jump out of planes, I got my request in that day and two weeks later, I was jumping."

Rasmussen climbed into the back of the team's sky bus to make the slow journey to the destination altitude, cruising through clouds and listening to the team make jokes. Looking like they were on their way to the movies rather than about to jump out of a perfectly good plane, the team was relaxed and ready to have some fun with their victims... rather, their jump partners.

The warning came over the radio that they were approaching their drop zone and everyone shuffled into position. A bit of turbulence sent Rasmussen and Shaw back into their seats but they were able to recover, checked their straps and made their way to the back of the plane. One by one, the others fell into the clouds and it was finally Rasmussen's turn. A quick tumble and they were sailing free, reaching a top speed of 200 km/hr. What seemed like seconds later, their canopy was open and they drifted safely towards the Moose Jaw Municipal Airport.

Shaw clearly loves what he does and hopes everyone appreciates the show on Sunday. "We'll be doing acrobatics with our canopies and will be jumping from 6000 feet."

"Me and my partner will get in a leg lock in the air and then we do barrel rolls, pinwheels and then bring the show right down to 15 or 20 feet above the ground and then break apart."

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds will also be on their home turf to show off what they can do as the two demonstration teams have a little healthy, but friendly, rivalry going on.
