Hoping that they will focus on protecting the brain development in youth, the Saskatchewan School Boards Association wants the provincial government to give serious consideration to a letter they've sent to the Legislature.

SSBA president Shawn Davidson says youth need to be at the forefront of the conversation with marijuana becoming legal next summer.  Along with a need for legislation, schools need new curriculum on how to deal with the change in laws.

"There's been a lot of questions around curriculum and our organization takes the position that we would like to see the curriculum enhanced but we don't have any knowledge of any work that may be going on at this moment." said Davidson. "There is a Curriculum Advisory Committee in place that will be meeting soon, we hope."

The SSBA is recommending that the new legislation for marijuana include a minimum age of consumption being set at 22, fund generated through cannabis taxation should be directed to education and health, no advertising for cannabis be allowed, no use cannabis in public areas or property where youth will be and a ban on stores selling product near schools.
