Following more criticism over how city officials and SaskPower handle the replacement of street lights in Moose Jaw, the Crown Corporation sent a team of staff to City Hall this week to try and shed some light on the situation.

Rhea Brown is Director of Key and Major Accounts for SaskPower and wanted to explain to council that they are dedicated to making sure streets are well lit, in accordance with their contract to provide service to the city.

"overall, SaskPower is planning on investing more than over $1 million in the street light system in Moose jaw over the next two years." explained Brown. "We're aware of an ongoing issue with lines northwest of the city where wind and trees falling on them have repeatedly caused outages for customers and our street lights. We'll be investing in re-enforcing the lines with more insulation and bury them entirely, where we can."

Brown says in October, crews blitzed the city and fixed all of the burnt out street lights but went on to say the wind storm close to the end of the month, damaged a number of areas sending them back to the start.

Main Street is another problem spot for SaskPower.  The project to move underground cables and the update street lights, didn't happen because there were no bids on the tender.  So SaskPower was planning to try and get the work done in December but that would have impacted business during the holidays, so it will be pushed to the spring instead.
