"The Trial of Louis Riel" is celebrating their 50th anniversary this weekend with what they're calling their best show yet.

"It's the longest running historical dramatic theatrical production in North America," said Producer Peter Champagne. "It began in 1967 as a centennial project in which the Chamber of Commerce in the city of Regina wanted to do something to honour the centennial of all of the answers that came back to what was the most important event in the past hundred years, which was the trial of Louis Riel."

John Coulter, a playwright, was commissioned to write the play about the trial of Louis Riel, and he took the transcripts straight from the five day trial and turned them into a two hour production.

To celebrate their bi-centennial, they are hosting a banquet and reception on Saturday, October 14th, with guest speakers such as Jim Daschuk, a Professor at the University of Regina, Russell Fayant, a teacher of Metis history, Metis culture and Michif, and many other speakers.

On Sunday October 15th, they will hold a performance of the play in Regina, where the trial took place back in 1885.

"Louis Riel is a Father of Confederation and this story takes place in Saskatchewan. It is the most important Indigenous/Metis story and its about all of us. These issues are alive and well today."
