Due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases, the Prairie South School Division has made the decision to suspend tournament travel for school sports teams until Jan. 22.

The discussion came up while discussing out-of-province school trips at the Prairie South School Division board meeting on Tuesday.

Trustee Lew Young inquired about approval given to wrestling teams to attend a tournament in Alberta and whether restrictions would allow it.

Derrick Huschi, superintendent of school operations for Grade 9 to 12 schools, said the wrestling tournament isn’t until after Jan. 22, but basketball teams have been notified that traveling to tournaments and hosting tournaments has been put on pause.

Huschi added that the situation is a little bit different for rural school teams that have to travel for league games.

“They will still be able to continue to have those types of games because that is their league games, whereas schools in and around Moose Jaw will be allowed to play in their leagues only, so we're keeping them within the division,” Huschi said.

Prairie South School Division teams in Moose Jaw will still be allowed to play against teams for Holy Trinity Catholic School Division in league play.

Huschi explained that the school division will re-evaluate closer to Jan. 22 to decide what happens past that date.
