#IWillReportIt - that's the name of a campaign that recently launched by the Saskatchewan Association of Safe Workplaces in Health.

The premise of the initiative is exactly that. They're encouraging employees all over the province to report any incidents of violence or abuse, whether that be by a patient or their family.

SEIU-West which encompasses a number of workers in Saskatchewan is having mixed emotions about it. They stated that they are obviously happy it was created, but disappointed that the video featured for the campaign shines a light on people in the medical and care industry, as that's only a small representation while areas such as long-term care and in-home care aids were missed.

They also noted that encouraging employees to report all incidents is only half the battle, and it's the responsibility of an organization or employee to implement change to avoid a similar situation in the future.

“You cannot improve safety by simply reporting such incidents,” said Neil Colmin, Vice President of SEIU-West in a press release. “Rather, the employer needs to commit to put a process in place to ensure that these type of incidents do not continue to occur. It is frustrating for our members who continue to report when no actions are taken to improve safety. It really does make us wonder if the underlying message is that the hazards we face daily are just part of the job we do.”

This union has roughly 13,000 Saskatchewan employees that they represent.
