They identified an issue early and the timing was on their side.

The Assiniboia Water Treatment Plant is set to undergo 2 million dollars worth of upgrades, with the work expected to be finished by this time next year.

Mayor Bob Himbeault explained the first steps to upgrading the Water Treatment Plant.

"Well it's certainly something that's been needed. We identified it when we did an infrastructure masterplan a number of years ago, and there was a number of items at the water plant that were identified in the masterplan."

The plan was created a few years ago, right as a grant was available for improving water infrastructure. Assiniboia jumped at the opportunity.

"We are in the process of our water treatment plant upgrades. We have got over a 2 million dollar upgrade going on out there and we are hoping a year from now that big project will be completed," said Himbeault.

He also noted that without the grant it would have taken years to save the money required to make such an upgrade.

"When you run out of quality and quantity water, your community can be in serious trouble - so it's very important that it's very high on any community's priority list is your water supply. You can't survive without it."

This is something that Himbeault and the community acknowledged, so they decided to act before it became a major issue.
