Four students from Vanier Collegiate recently took part in the 'My Money My Future' national financial literacy competition.

The team was made up of student lead Grace Kiefer and team members Memphis Peters, Lauren Walcer and Josh Auger.

Kiefer explained why they decided to enter the contest.

“We got involved because our teacher Miss Christa Lapointe said she found the contest and we could do the contest or have a final exam and we didn't really want to do a final,” she said.

The competition, put on by the Canadian Foundation of Economic Education and CIBC, challenged high school students ages 14 to 18 to come up with creative ways to teach about finances.

In order to make it to the national competition, the team from Vanier had to first compete in the provincial competition. Over 1,100 submissions took part across Canada at the provincial level with only the first-place winners moving on to the national competition.

The Vanier team would go on to win Saskatchewan’s competition.

For the national competition, the Moose Jaw team submitted two YouTube videos, one about credit cards and the other about investments.

Kiefer said they learned a lot about finances during these competitions.

“We have heard a lot from other students when they are preparing to go university and realizing how little they know about student loans and about saving everything,” she said.

“So, we thought we would take this opportunity to help yourselves and other students by figuring out what we want to know more about so we can be better prepared for our future.”
