Vehicle theft is nothing new in Moose Jaw, but even with awareness campaigns and SGI reminding people to not leave their keys inside their vehicles, the numbers are still going up.

Manager, Auto Fund Communications with SGI, Kelley Brinkworth, broke down the numbers for us.

"In the past year there have been 99 vehicle theft claims reported in Moose Jaw and surrounding area. If we look at the breakdown of those 99 claims, 38 were for trucks, 26 cars, 16 SUVs, 12 transport trailers, 4 utility trailers, 2 vans and one power unit."

SGI stats for 2014-2016 show 91% of stolen vehicles are recovered, but 51% are deemed a total loss.

"We do hear from police that about half of all vehicles that are stolen had the keys inside. Either left in the ignition, or the key fob was hidden somewhere. You might think it's a good hiding spot, but chances are a savvy thief is going to find those keys in your vehicle."

The best way to prevent your vehicle from becoming someone else's joy ride: don't make it appealing.

"Don't leave any valuables in the vehicle at all if you can help it; take them into your house. Even just spare change in the cup holder, clear it out so that there is no incentive for a thief as they're walking by and they see that in there."

To compare, Swift Current only had 10 reported stolen within the last 12 months.
