With the weather constantly switching between freezing and warm, Moose Jaw's pipes have been taking a hit.

Currently, a number of roads are closed or blocked off due to recent water main breaks.

Staci Dobrescu, Public Works Supervisor for Water and Waste Water, details which roads are currently affected in Moose Jaw.

"Right now the roads closed for water main breaks are 2nd Ave NE from Fairford St to High St, Home Street from 1st Ave to 3rd, 2nd Ave from Maple to Iroquois, and the intersection of 2nd Ave NE and Marlborough is all closed."

She recommends avoiding these areas entirely if possible.

"Drivers should be very cautious when approaching any city workers on the street, or barricaded areas. Frequently the water when it begins to flow, it can take us some time to actually shut that off. Once we do actually have the break off it does create a sheet of ice. So please drive very cautiously."

And while it is a hassle to have to drive around all these closures, there is a reason the barricades are up and why people should not be driving on these closed roads.

"One of the issues we do have is people going around the barricades. The barricades are placed there for a reason, because even though the water has surfaced, it can actually create a cavity under the roadway. So when we block the road off, it's for the publics safety as well as the sites safety."

As of January 1st 2018, Moose Jaw has had 13 water main breaks in total.
