The Government of Saskatchewan is warning drivers to keep safety top of mind on the highways, especially during harvest.

Large and slow-moving farm equipment will be using the highway to move between crops, in a release from the government, the Minister of Highways and Infrastructure Lori Carr said “Nice weather makes for a busy time on the farm in Saskatchewan. By planning ahead and taking the appropriate steps, we can help limit the safety risks connected to harvest.”

Here are some tips for any farmers moving equipment on the highways:

  • take extra precautions when passing slow-moving farm equipment;
  • be respectful of other drivers, as slow-moving vehicles can cause frustration;
  • ensure lights are working and adjusted before moving farm equipment on public highways;
  • know all height, length and weight restrictions on farm vehicles and when permits may be required; and
  • regularly inspect and maintain equipment.

Farm vehicles must also comply with many of the same rules and regulations commercial vehicle operators follow and can be inspected by the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol.

Also, make sure you obey all signs and posted speed limits in construction zones, even without workers in the area.
