For the most part, officials within the community of Assiniboia are smiling after this year's budget when compared to last year's, when the provincial government made some major cuts to cities and towns.

Mayor of Assiniboia, Bob Himbeault, said it was a much softer blow in 2018 and even brought them back to positive numbers.

"We lost a little bit on the revenue sharing, but we gained more back when they reinstated the SaskEnergy surcharge which comes back to the municipalities," explained Himbeault. "Last year they kept it and it was a huge impact on us, but this year they restored that. In the long run we're a few dollars ahead here."

Last year following the province's announcement of the budget, the community south of Moose Jaw found themselves in a bit of hot water as they did their best to adjust to the impact of the government's decisions.

"We don't do our budget ahead of time. We had our final budget meeting last Wednesday night, which was the day after, [we waited] until we got all the official figures. Last year we had to do some juggling because we did do it ahead of time, but didn't pass it. We heard it on Tuesday, we finalized our budget on Wednesday night with the new figures and we'll go from there."

With big plans and more excitement than last year, officials are eager to have their local budget approved in Assiniboia so they can start rolling out their new plans for their community.

"We're just looking forward to the year, and what our plans are in the budget and if it's approved Monday night.... and I think we will, we're looking forward to doing some major improvements."
