HATLEY

On Tuesday, January 2nd, 2024, at the age of 95 years, we said goodbye to our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Austen Edgar Hatley, who passed away at the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital in Moose Jaw, SK with family by his side.  He was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Mable Hatley; wife, Jean; sister, Beatrice; brother, James; son, Charles; and great-grandson, Konnor.

Austen was born in Central Butte, SK on February 8th, 1928, the youngest of 5 children born to Herbert and Mable Hatley.  He attended Robin Hood School and then went on to become a mechanic, which led him to Edmonton, AB to obtain his welder’s ticket, a natural gift that he had.  Austen married Jean Bishop on July 18th, 1952 in Lawson, SK and they lived on the Hatley homestead, where they began their family.  Austen was a farmer and had a welding business with his brother Jim.  He sat on the RM board and was a founding member of Palliser Regional Park, as he was an avid fisherman and camper.  Austen and Jean spent many winters in Arizona and joined the Good Sam Club, travelling throughout Canada and the USA.  This is where Austen found his love for golf, and he golfed right up to the age of 90.

Austen supported Jean by moving to Iver Main Place Inc. in April 2016, remaining with her until her passing.  Even after Jean’s passing, Austen was often seen daily scooting out to the graveyard to visit the love of his life.  Austen will be missed for his quiet demeaner, his beautiful smile, his friendly wave, and his love for his family.

Austen will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Janet (Darwin) Glass; grandchildren: Jodi (Dale) Sims, Brody, Bryden and Brooklyn, Cori, Kylie, Morgan, Rhett and Rhyker, Tanya, Hunter and Dawson, Audra (Ryan) Peterson, Kohen, Kolbi, Kolton, and Kortni; son, Edgar (Heather) Hatley; grandchildren Krista (J.P.) Martin, Maëlle and Kelsey, Ryan (Heather) Hatley, Treyven and Daavy, Blaine (Melyssa) Hatley, Hailey, Spencer, and Harvey; sister, Laura Evans; brother, Bruce Hatley; brother-in-law, Rick Bishop; and sisters-in-law, Marion Songer and Merle Bishop.

Austen’s family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Iver Main Place for all the love and care provided to Austen.

The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, January 9th, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in Central Butte United Church, Central Butte, SK.  Heather McKinnon will officiate and interment will take place in Central Butte Cemetery.

A Time of Visitation for Family and Friends will be held at the church prior to the service from 12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m.

As an expression of sympathy, donation in Austen’s name may be made to Central Butte Iver Main Auxiliary, Box 550, Central Butte, SK S0H 0T0.
