Back to school is just around the corner, and the Salvation Army is hosting its annual backpack program, an initiative that provides schools supplies to families in need.

The program took a year hiatus in 2020, with the pandemic causing safety issues with distribution.

Friday is the last day to apply for the program, you can do so at the Salvation Army Thrift Store location.

Lieutenant Lester Ward of the Moose Jaw Salvation Army, explains why this program is so important.

"Heading back to school here very soon, we wanted to make sure that we could support families that are struggling during this time, especially coming through a COVID-19 transition," says Ward.

Wared also says the need for supplies is increasing.

"In 2018 we served 44 children with backpacks full of supplies, and in 2019 we served 114 children, we basically jumped 70 backpacks," says Ward.

Each backpack is different depending on the age of the student.

"We have conversations with the parent, and the age of the child determines the requirements they need for school," says Ward.

Superstore will also be collecting donations for the program from August 21 to 25.
