Dylan Jones beats Nolan Mastalier short side for the Mustangs' 2nd goal of the night.

The Bantam Mustangs opened their new home with a solid effort on Sunday night, beating the Regina Titans, 9-3, at Mosaic Place.

The Mustangs have moved over to Mosaic Place this season and played well in their first game there, taking advantage of the higher ceiling for numerous stretch passes and breakaway opportunities.

“It was pretty positive in all aspects,” said head coach Chad Morash after the win.  “Overall, our passing, our running, our condition is starting to pay off already right off the beginning of the year.”

The Mustangs wasted no time getting on the board just 4:35 into the game on a goal from Quinn Ingalls.  Only 30 seconds later, Dylan Jones made it 2-0 with his first of two on the night.  The two teams would feel each other out for the rest of the period with the Mustangs controlling much of the play with strong ball possession.

Moose Jaw really opened the game up in the second period, sending more players out for stretch passes and getting behind the Titans' defenders.  Sam Rigetti made it 3-0 just under three minutes into the frame.  Mason Viczko, Jones and Rigetti (again), and Ben Helland would score to make it 7-0 heading into the third period.

The Titans didn't roll over to start the third, they got two quick goals from Colton Bear and Austin King-Cunningham to make it 7-2, but the Mustangs answered right back.  Rigetti completed his hat trick and Viczko got his second of the game to finish of the scoring for the Mustangs.

“It was a pretty good game, pretty solid game,” stated Morash.  “We opened it up in the second a little bit, got a little more comfortable, and as they got gassed in the third period, those passes weren't on the money, but that's going to come with conditioning.”

The scoring was spread out for the Mustangs in the season opener with five different players finding the back of the net.  “We're well blessed with really good shooters out there,” said Morash.

The game got a bit feisty at the end with both teams taking a number of penalties after a fairly clean game through the first two periods.   Morash added that's something they'll need to work on going forward, “Just keeping their calm and sticking to their plays.  We had a little bit of retaliation and that's something that we've got to get rid of if we want to be success.”

Anyway you at it, Sunday was a good start to the season for the Mustangs and a game to build off heading into the rest of the season.

“This is probably one of the best years I've seen where the kids are here to play and they're starting to get what the game is all about, so it's a lot of fun to be out there,” added Morash.

The Bantam's next game is May 7th in Regina against the Rock.   Lacrosse action on Monday night has the Novice Mustangs in Regina to face off with the Royals, 6:30pm at the Al Ritchie Arena.
