Mosaic Place hosted the Best of the West Regional Cheer and Dance Competition this past Sunday, February 13th.  It was Mosaic's first non-ice competition since before the pandemic.

Over 100 teams across Saskatchewan and a few from Manitoba and Alberta all came to Moose Jaw to show off their routines.

“The last time that all of our teams were able to perform with full stunts and routines was just about two years ago in March 2020,” says Melissa Marzolf owner and head coach of Cheer Infinity Athletics.

Marzolf says the pandemic gave the athletes time to perfect their skills, “Even though all the unknown, their passion shone right through and we could see that on Sunday when they could hit the stage for the first time in a long time.”

The gym even brought home some first-place medals. One of the first place medals was earned by Cheer Infinity’s U8 Comets. They also won the Grand Champion title at the competition.

She also added that Mosaic place was a next-to-perfect venue for the competition.

“Having it in Mosaic Place was wonderful, not a bad seat in the house, every seat you can see them perform, we had a fan zone and the athletes had tons of space in the back half of the rink,” says Marzolf.

The crew at Mosaic Place was just as excited to host the competition. General Manager Ryan McIvor says the competition brought new energy to the center and the city.

“Over 1000-1100 athletes came to the venue plus over 2500 families, friends, fans. The building was busy. It was full of excitement and electricity and it was just amazing to see those cheer athletes perform,” says McIvor.

Mosaic Place was buzzing with people throughout the weekend. McIvor called it a trifecta weekend since there were hockey games both Friday and Saturday and then Mosaic’s crew converted the building overnight to host the cheerleading competition on Sunday.

McIvor did add that the competition was also beneficial for the community.

“It was a great weekend for Mosaic place but also for the city of Moose Jaw in terms of overnight hotel rooms, restaurants, etc,” says McIvor.

He confirmed that Mosaic Place is currently going through and finalizing the terms and details to bring back the cheer and dance competition next year.
