The University of Saskatchewan Huskies came up just short of bringing the U Sports University Cup men's hockey championship back to the province on Sunday, falling 5-3 to the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds.

Former Warrior Cam Braes had four goals in the win for the Varsity Reds as they captured their second straight University Cup title and seventh overall.

Braes opened the scoring 4:04 into the game, but former Regina Pat and Saskatoon Blade Connor Gay responded for the Huskies just past the midway point of the first.

Mark Simpson scored just under two minutes later to make it 2-1 UNB after one.

Braes took over in the second period, scoring twice in the first 6:16 to complete the hat trick and make it 4-1 for the Varsity Reds. Jordan Fransoo, a former Brandon Wheat King, answered back for the Huskies just 2:09 later to cut UNB’s lead back down to two.

Kohl Bauml found the back of the net early in the third period for the Huskies to make it a one-goal game, but that was as close as they got, as Braes added his fourth of the game later in the frame to seal the win.

Warriors alum Andrew Johnson had an assist in the loss for the Huskies, who featured six Warrior alumni.

Marc McNulty, Sam Fioretti and the Acadia Axemen came away with the bronze medal, beating the St. Francis Xavier X-Men, 7-3, in the third place game on Sunday morning.
