The Moose Jaw Canucks have only had to play a full game twice so far this season on their way to a 7-0 record in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League’s Midget AA Division.

The Canucks won via the mercy rule for the fifth time in seven games this season on Wednesday night when they steamrolled the Notre Dame Argos, 12-0, at Ross Wells Park.

“The important thing is that we’re keeping with the basics,” said Pitcher Tysen Jordison. “Wins are nice and winning by this much is nice, we’re on a nice little streak here and hopefully we can just keep it going.”

So far this season, the Canucks have been sharp in every aspect of the game. Their pitching has limited the oppositions opportunities; their hitters have punished opposing pitchers; and their defence has been lights out with little to no errors in all seven games.

It’s made for a fun start to the season for the local club.

“We like the way that we’re playing right now,” said Jordison, who went four shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out two with no walks.

“I just try to keep it simple,” added Jordison on his pitching performance. “I’ll attack the strike zone, use my secondary pitches in good counts and just try to keep the pitches per inning down and luckily I had some good defence behind me to keep it down.”

Jordison also helped himself out with the bat, finishing 1-for-2 with a double, run scored and two RBI in the win.

Moose Jaw finished with nine hits.

“It’s nice to see the guys bat some balls over some heads and I don’t mind waiting (to get back on the mound) as long as they get a lot of runs for me,” said Jordison.

Second baseman Weston Mergal led the offensive charge for the Canucks, going 3-for-3 with one run scored, three RBI and a stole base in the win. Mergal finished off the game on the mound, throwing a perfect fifth inning with one strikeout.

The Canucks opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning and then blew the game open in the third inning, posting a nine-spot in the frame to take a double digit lead.

The inning really swung in Moose Jaw’s favour when Garrick Ward smacked an RBI triple deep to centerfield. He came around to score on the play when the throw back into the infield got away from the Argos.

Ward finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Raine Eberl also picked up a pair of hits in the win, while Tyler Lorenz drove in a pair of runs out of the lead-off spot.

Moose Jaw also stole five bases.

The Canucks will get a good test this weekend as they travel to Saskatoon for the annual Selects Tournament.

“There will be some good teams up there, hopefully we get some good close games, really work the mental aspect and physically aspect of the game,” said Jordison. “Hopefully we can stay strong, get some good pitching and the bats are doing good right now, so that’s not a worry.”

Next league action for the Canucks will come on Monday when they head into Regina to face the Blue Jays.
