Colts catcher Deleigh LaSalle tries to apply the tag on the Steelers runner at the plate during Sunday's Final.

The Moose Jaw Senior Ladies Fastball Tournament came down to one local team and one from Carnduff on Sunday.  It wasn’t close though as the Southeast Steelers took advantage of their opportunities and picked up a 7-2 win over the Moose Jaw Colts.

“Playing against a team like this, if you have that one bad inning unfortunately that will get you,” said Nicole Allport from the Colts, who helped organize the entire tournament.  “They had some fantastic pitching, but all in all, they’re a fantastic team to play against, we often see them at provincials, so I’m pretty happy despite the one bad inning.”

Alyssa Taylor was lights out on the mound for the Steelers in picking up the win.  She went the full seven innings, giving up just five hits with 14 strikeouts.  The Colts two runs against her came off the long ball, as Jana Simpson and Keri Merkel picked up solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings respectively.

The game was actually close through the first five innings as Kin Neithercurt was able to get out of trouble in the early innings.  It didn’t happen in the sixth though, the Steelers picked up four runs to put the game away.

“They’re a close knit group of girls, they’ve been playing together for years and they all work hard, you can definitely the passion when they play,” said Allport.  “They’re just a good, fun, hard working team and it’s just evident in the way they play.”

Caralie Wait and Merkel were both 2-for-3 at the plate in the loss for the Colts.

Despite the loss in the final, it was a really good weekend for the Colts as they picked up a 10-1 win over the Lasers and a 6-1 win over the Moosomin Predators in the round robin.  They then took out the Hustlers 7-0 in the final.

“I know on Saturday we had commented that we need to get on the sticks a little bit more,” said Allport.  “On Saturday, we were hitting in only one inning and then trying to hold teams off.  (Sunday) against the Hustlers and then in the final, we were hitting throughout the game, so we definitely took our own advice.

“Pre-ball season, it’s a little bit hectic trying to get practice time together, but we’re doing great, our pitchers are throwing awesome, so I’m really excited to see where we’ll be in a month or two,” she added.

While it was a successful weekend for the Colts, it was also a successful weekend for the annual tournament as mother nature cooperated for a good weekend.

“It was a great weekend, there was good turnout in terms of spectators, lots of great ball and the weather cooperated for the first time in three years, so I would say it was a successful tournament,” Allport stated.

The Senior Ladies Fastball League is back on the field Wednesday for a doubleheader at Caribou Heights.  The Colts and Slammers square off at 6:30pm and the Lasers take on the Hustlers at 8:30pm.
