I can still remember my very first day of school.  I was so excited.   I remember being worried about it but my mom and my older siblings reassured me.  They told me I'd have fun and make new friends.  They were right.

It was September of 1970.  I had just turned 5 years old and would attend kindergarten at Sherwood School in Regina.  It was just around the corner from our place on Coldwell Road.

I still remember gathering with some of the neighbourhood kids for a photo that morning.  I still have it.  I was wearing brand new clothing.  I was so proud of my sporty cardigan.  It was navy blue with a bold, white "R" for Robbie on the front.

Miss Reed was our kindergarten teacher.  She was warm and kind.  She tried to teach me how to be patient and she succeeded in teaching me how to tie my shoes.

We played games and had fun and we had snack time around mid-morning.  That would be followed by a nap and then at 11 O'clock it was time for Sesame Street.  We watched it every day.

At 11:45 the bell would ring and it was time to get home for lunch and The Flintstones on TV and then an afternoon of freedom.

Kindergarten.  That was the best time.
