I had a colourful conversation about pants the other day.  A co-worker laughed at me for my use of the word "slacks".

I said he was wearing slacks but he said he doesn't wear slacks.  He said slacks are the pants our dads used to buy from Canaday's in the 70s.  I told him I still wear my slacks from Canaday's.  Like my old friend John Hunter used to say, "Quality never goes out of style."

My co-worker was right.  He was wearing khakis.  I now know this because I looked up the difference.  You see, khakis are constructed with a heavier weight, cotton fabric while chinos are made with a lightweight cotton or cotton blend fabric and have visible stitching which gives them a more finished, formal and dressy look.  Khakis are more casual.

I also found that slacks are loose fitting while pants are not that loose though they are also comfortable.  Pants are formal while slacks are casual wear.   Oh, and pants are synonymous with trousers.

So, I guess we were both wrong.  By definition, I believe it was pants or trousers our dads used to wear.

So, why am I telling you this?  Well, to be honest, I had nothing else to talk about today.  I guess I'm "slacking" off.
