Algae blooms are growing thanks to the heat and humidity this summer and that could affect how much fun we have on the lake.

If you're going to be spending any time near water this summer, Saskatchewan Environment is reminding you to avoid swimming in or drinking water where blue-green algae blooms are occurring.

Senior Water Policy Analyst Richard Zitta explains.

"The algae is usually a thick green, it almost looks like pea soup or spilled paint. It can be bluish white and even grey in colour, kind of a slimy, disgusting appearance and smelly so most people natural avoid going into the lake when it's really bad."

Contact with algae contaminated water can result in a number of consequences including red skin, sore throat, and cramps. Pet owners and livestock producers are also advised to keep their animals away from such water.
