Starting the day, there was a worry that there wouldn't be enough candidates. But by 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon there were six names on the list for the five trustee positions in the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division.

Helene Chenard is one of those six candidates and would like to do her part for the children of Holy Trinity. "I'm a retired teacher and I found that I was still interested in what was happen in the schools even several years after retirement."

"This is one way to keep in touch with education and to contribute and I think we need to continue to have people who are interested in order to keep up those high standards."

Chenard believes the past school boards have done a good job, but more may need to be done regarding healthy eating and exercise in our schools. Chenard taught in the French immersion program at St. Margaret's here in Moose Jaw for a number of years and believes there are some ways to ensure that students keep using the skills that they've learned in the French program.  Chenard says while students use French in their daily lives while in school, as soon as they graduate, most of the French immersion participants start to lose that skill.

As a former teacher, she also found that there were limited resources for people wanting to use French outside the classroom, such as bi-lingual websites and social media. She hopes that more resources will be available for students wanting to keep the language beyond grade school.

In Moose Jaw, the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division managed to avoid a second call for nominations after four candidates came forward and filed their paperwork on deadline day.  As a result, six candidates are set to campaign for five available seats. Chenard, Joann Blazieko, Gisele Perrault, Joan Schwinghamer, Zosima White and Patricia Gottselig.

While all of the candidates have handed in their nomination forms, they have 24 hours to think about their decision before the candidates list is sent off to the printers. Returning Officer Myron Gulka-Tiechko confirms that the ballots could still change if any of them decide to withdraw before Thursday, September 20th at 4pm.  If one candidate drops out, there would be no need for an election as the remaining five candidates would be acclaimed since there are only five seats.
