Concerned about street and sidewalk conditions in the Friendly City? Wondering how much the City is spending on road repairs next year?

The City of Moose Jaw has recently released their budget estimates and capital project projections for 2020 and beyond which includes plans for road and sidewalk repairs over the next four years.

Between 2020 and 2024, a total of $18,750,000 will be allocated for restoration treatments to paved roads, which will target streets in fair conditions to restore them to good conditions. These treatments include mill and pave, mill and pave with an overlay, thin overlay, levelling, crack sealing, and micro surfacing.

The City of Moose Jaw maintains a total of 227 km of paved roadways, 83 km of which are designated arterial/collector. Besides paved roads, the City also maintains 88 km of lanes and 29.5 km of gravelled roads.

More than $866,000 will be allocated over four years for the rehabilitation of those areas. Progress will also be made on sidewalks, curbs and gutter repairs, to the tune of $2,799,530 over four years. There is currently an estimated 219 km, or 146,000 slabs, worth of concrete sidewalks in the city, 102 km of curbs and gutters, and 16,000 m2 of meridians that the City is responsible for maintaining.

According to the City’s capital project summary sheet, it’s only when sidewalk defects are significant enough or become a safety concern that replacement is considered. It bears noting that anytime it’s applicable, wheelchair ramps are added whenever development/replacement of a corner sidewalk piece is undertaken.
