Moose Jaw City Council approved a special events permit application to allow the Royal Canadian Legion to hold their third annual street dance and cabaret.

An exemption to the noise bylaw was also given to allow the event to take place from June 29 at 5 p.m. to June 30 at 2 a.m.

During this time, the 200 block of High Street West will be closed to traffic for the event.

“The funds raised from this event help ensure the long-term sustainability of our local branch. They are estimating that approximately 800 people would attend,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Derek Blais.

The special event permit was approved with the following conditions:

  • That there is a designated area for the sale, service and consumption of alcohol that is securely fenced off.
  • Comply with regulations in the Alcohol and Gaming Regulations Act.
  • Obtain and display all necessary licenses and approvals from SLGA.
  • Tent and fence locations must be approved or coordinated with the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Public liability insurance of at least $5 million must be purchased with includes the serving and consumption of alcohol.
  • That the city is not liable for any loss, demands, costs or expenses, including legal fees, over any negligence or acts or omissions at the event.
  • The legion will bear all costs associated with the event.
  • Work with the Department of Operations for the street closure.
  • Notify all businesses on either side of High Street West that may be impacted by the closure.
  • Adhere to the noise bylaw exemption.

Coun. Dawn Luhning made the motion to approve the special event permit.

“I’d be happy to move the motion that’s in the report because this has been a very successful event for the Royal Canadian Legion over the last few years. Congratulations to them for finding a fun summer way to raise money for the branch,” said Luhning.

Coun. Crystal Froese added that it’s a special year for the Royal Canadian Legion.

“They were part of the community looking at incorporating the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 100th anniversary theme, and this is one of their events too that they’re going to do that,” Froese said.
