Over $1 million was stolen from Saskatoon taxpayers after a fraudster, posing as the chief financial officer for a prominent construction company, contacted city officials to advise them of a fake change in banking information.

Saskatoon city officials announced yesterday that the fraud began a few weeks ago and involved a single payment of $1.04 million from the city of Saskatoon.

City manager Jeff Jorgenson said in a press conference that this type of theft has never happened at city hall before. He said the city is now focussing on recovering the money.

Few details have been released but Saskatoon City officials say that the investigation is ongoing, and no city hall employees have been disciplined.
