The long-standing issue of abandoned scrap tires in Assiniboia will soon be taken care of.

In an announcement Tuesday afternoon, Environment Minister Dustin Duncan said the Tire Stewardship of Saskatchewan (TSS) will be starting the clean up in the months ahead.

"Any contaminated site in Saskatchewan becomes a risk to public health and safety if not managed properly," Duncan said in a release.  "The Ministry of the Environment is taking steps through the Environmental Management and Protection Act, 2010 to address the cleanup of abandoned scrap tires in Assiniboia to ensure public safety and prevent tire fires".

The Assiniboia Rubber recycling plant closed in February of 2014, leaving behind 6,678 tonnes of scrap tires and processed materials.  The facility went into receivership in July of 2014.

The money for the cleanup will come from the provincial government and be overseen by TSS.

Assiniboia Mayor Bob Himbeault is pleased.

"The town is very pleased with this announcement, as this issue has been very concerning for Council, Administration, and our greater community.  We are looking forward to a successful resolution".
