The Nunavut Lori Eddy rink surprised the curling world with a 6-5 win over Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville in the Tuesday morning draw at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts at Mosaic Place.

McCarville has heavy on her draw to a buried Eddy stone, giving Nunavut a steal of one in the tenth end.

“I can’t believe that just happened,” Eddy said after the match. “We have made respect for Mrista McCarville’s team. They were playing so well and when we missed that draw to give up the steal, I thought we were sunk in the water.”

Northern Ontario led 5-1 after five ends and seemed well in control of the game. The sixth end saw Nunavut get two points and give up the hammer, but they ended up stealing three in a row.

McCarville picked on a key shot in eight, leading to one of the steals.

“Looking at the field, and looking at the pool, our goal was to just be competitive in these games and make the other teams really deserve the win over us,” Eddy said. “This is a huge bonus to come out with the win. We’re so proud of ourselves.”

Elsewhere B.C.’s Corryn Brown won 7-3 over Yukon’s Hailey Birnie and PEI’s Suzanne Birt won 9-3 over Newfoundland and Labrodor’s Erica Curtis.

Team Canada won 7-5 over Alberta, moving both teams to 3-and-2.
