The Moose Jaw Element Panthers had a great showing at the Under-15 Women's Sask Cup #2 in Saskatoon over the weekend, taking third place in Tier 1.

They came back from a set down to beat the Weyburn Volleyball Club in the bronze medal game.  Weyburn won the opening set, 18-25, but Moose Jaw bounced back with a 25-22 win in the second set and a 15-13 win in the third to take bronze.

The Mavericks Volleyball Club from Manitoba beat the Lloydminster Lakeland Rustlers in the final.


Locals Perform Well In Edmonton

The Moose Jaw Koseikan Judo Club had a very strong showing at the Edmonton International Tournament over the weekend with six gold and nine medals in total coming back with the local athletes.

There was over 700 athletes entered in the competition, including a team from Japan.

Tyson Blatchford, Carter Craik, Justin Wiens, Dominick Mall, Adam Blatchford and Trent Hanson all won gold medals in their respective divisions.  Hanson also won a silver as the lone multiple winner.  Damien Wiens, Ashley German and Brooke Graham also took home silver medals.

The local team will return home on Tuesday and start getting ready to host the Provincial Goodwill Camp this weekend.  We'll have more details on that later this week.


Contacts Heading Back To Telus Cup

While the Moose Jaw Generals are focused on next year's Telus Cup, the Saskatoon Contacts are heading back to the Midget AAA National Championship for the second straight year after winning the Western Regional over the weekend.

The Saskatchewan Midget AAA League champ knocked off the Thunder Bay Kings, 3-0, in the final on Sunday afternoon.

The Contacts will head into the Telus Cup in Sault Ste Marie this year looking to improve on last year's bronze medal finish.

Last year's champion will be back again as well with Moose Jaw Warriors prospect Logan Hermas and the Red Deer Chiefs winning the Pacific Regional over fellow Warriors prospect Brandon Del Grosso and the Vancouver Northwest Giants, 3-2, on Sunday.

Red Deer has the chance to be the first back-to-back winner since the Notre Dame Hounds won in 2009 and 2010.


Edmonton Goes Up 2-0

The Edmonton Oil Kings have held the Medicine Hat Tigers to one goal in two games as they lead their second round WHL playoff series 2-0 after winning 2-0 in Game 2 on Sunday.

Henrik Samuelsson scored for the Oil Kings on the power play midway through the first period and that would be all the needed for the win as Laurent Brossoit stopped all-33 shots he faced.  Cody Corbett was the other goal scorer for Edmonton in the game.

They meet for Game 3 on Tuesday in Medicine Hat.

In WHL Western Conference action on Sunday, the Kamloops Blazers knocked off the Kelowna Rockets, 5-1, to go up 2-0 in their series.

Calgary and Red Deer meet for Game 3 in the lone game on Monday.


Canada Falls In World Men's Curling Final

Canada lost in the final at the 2013 World Men's Curling Championship, falling 8-6 to Sweden on Sunday night.

This was Canada's first loss in the final since 2009.

The Brad Jacobs rink won twice on Saturday to advance to the final through the 3-4 page playoff.  They had went 7-4 during the round robin.
