Location matters when it comes to your smoke alarms and that's the message behind this year's Fire prevention week.

This year's theme is to "Hear the beep where you sleep".

Cathy Basset is the Public Education Officer for the Moose Jaw Fire Department and explains where you should always keep smoke detectors.

"Every bedroom needs a smoke detector. If you don't have one then close to your room, you may not be able to hear it if you're a deep sleeper and some seniors have a hard time hearing too."

Basset explains what you should be doing to ensure your safety should there be a fire in your home.

"Once a month, you should check your battery and once a year you should replace it. If your alarm starts chriping, it means that your battery is dying. If you have an interconnected smoke alarm, they usually have a 10-year battery life."

It is always important to make sure that your batteries are still good, since over half of fire related deaths occur overnight.
