Moose Jaw's Mike Flegel was able to overcome some strong winds and rain during the opening round of the 104th Saskatchewan Amateur Men's Golf Championship on Monday.

The local golfer shot a two-over 74 to sit tied for tenth, six shots off the lead, after the first round at the Woodlawn Golf Club in Estevan.

Weyburn's Rhys Tosczak holds a four-shot lead after the opening round. He was the only golfer in red figures, shooting a four-under 68 to lead Tyler Wright and Drew Kocur from Regina by four strokes.

Tosczak had just two bogeys during his round, while posting four birdies and an eagle.

Flegel was one-under after the front-nine, but had an up and down back-nine as he finished with six bogeys, one birdie and an eagle on the final nine holes. He was able to eagle 18 to cap off the day on a high note.

There were some other strong performances from local golfers during the opening day of competition.

Nick Lepine posted a three-over 75 to finish tied for 18th, while Trevor Benson was tied for 30th after putting up a six-over 78.

Nathan Corrin and Leighton Bearchell were playing in the same pairing for the first round, but they both struggled. Corrin shot a nine-over 81, while Bearchell bogeyed five straight to end the front-nine and came in at ten-over 82 to sit tied for 47th.

The second round was set to go on Tuesday, but play has been suspended due to high winds. They will now play the second round on Wednesday with the final two rounds going on Thursday. There will be a cut after the third round on Thursday.
