Students looking for a place to stay active after school can take advantage of a free drop-in program at the Yara Centre running throughout the school year.
The Discover Moose Jaw After-School Program, now in its second year, offers free access to the facility's turf for students ages five to 17 every school day from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
"The best part of this program is it's free," said Scott Osmachenko, recreation services manager with the City of Moose Jaw. "Every student ages 5 to 17 every school day can come to the R Center from 3:30 to 5:30, use the turf — absolutely free, again."
The program is a collaboration between Discover Moose Jaw, its parent company Golden West Broadcasting, and the City of Moose Jaw.
Students can participate in unstructured activities including soccer, football, frisbee, or other activities with friends. The program operates as a spontaneous drop-in rather than organized practice or instruction.
"It's not really like a practice. It's not organized. It's really just spontaneous drop-in fun for you and your friends," Osmachenko said.
Children under age 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Students age 12 and older can sign in independently at the front desk. City bus route four provides direct service to the Yara Centre for students using public transit.
"The grass is always green. There's never any bugs. There's never any wind chill and it's never snowing inside the Yara Center," Osmachenko said. "So yeah, it's a great place to kind of escape ... inside."
The facility also offers winter programming, with registration for new sessions opening Thursday, Dec. 4 at 6 a.m. Gift cards for recreation programs are available for purchase at the Kinsman Sportsplex or Yara Centre front desks.
