He first came to Saskatchewan to play junior hockey back in the 80s and now Tom Mckay has settled in.

Tom and his wife of 34 years, Kim, own and operate two Great Canadian Oil Change locations in Saskatchewan - one in Prince Albert and the Moose Jaw operation on Thatcher Drive East.

"My background is power engineering. I spent 18 years as a power engineer at a pulp mill in Prince George, BC before I bought into the business in 2010 in Prince Albert", Tom tells us.

"I'm a BC guy originally. I met Kim and worked for her dad for 10 years hauling heavy equipment and then moved back to BC in 1990 when I started my career at the pulp mill.  We moved back to Saskatchewan in 2010 to open up the shop in Prince Albert", Tom said.

We asked him to tell us more about his junior hockey career."Oh, not much to talk about there", Tom chuckled.  "I was more of a guy who liked the fisticuffs.  I played two years in the North Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League from 1980-81 through 1982-83 with the Hudson Bay Saints."

While Tom lives in the Prince Albert area, he spends several days a week at his Moose Jaw shop which he purchased in April of 2018. Great Canadian Oil Change is a family-owned, franchised oil change company with over 70 locations across Canada.

Tom describes his shops as "drive-thru car maintenance shops" that offer more than just oil changes."We do filter replacements, fluid changes and emission services and most basic maintenance you need on your vehicle. You can also get a full, 21-point diagnostic check for your vehicle at Great Canadian Oil Change."

"It's a visual inspection like, for belts or if you have anything underneath your car that may be damaged like a tie rod arm that might have an issue with it.  We give a little pull on everything just to make sure everything is tight - all your exhaust clamps and everything like that", Tom told us.

The automobile maintenance industry is a competitive one and Tom is well aware of that.  We asked him what sets his Great Canadian Oil Change outlet in Moose Jaw apart from the competition.

"Fast and friendly service and we're not salesmen.  We recommend what your owner's manual says needs to be done and when it needs to be done.  For example, if your owner's manual says you should service your transmission every 80,000 kilometres, we don't tell you that you have to do it we just tell you that's what's recommended by the manufacturer of your vehicle."

Quality service and quality products are guaranteed at Great Canadian Oil Change.  That's another thing Tom says set's his shops apart.

"Everything that we offer here is warranty-approved.  All the oils have to meet certain specs.  All the oils that we offer meet every manufacturer's recommendations from our oil filters to our engine air filters, transmission filters - it all meets or exceeds the recommendations.

"Another attractive feature at Great Canadian Oil Change is, you don't have to make an appointment."No, you do not," Tom says.

"That's one thing that really sets us apart, being a drive-thru service.  You pull up and it's first come first served.   It's anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes depending on what services you're having us do.  Obviously, if you're in for an oil change and a transmission service, it'll take a few extra minutes but for the most part, if you're coming in for just a basic oil change, you'll be out of here in about 7 to 10 minutes".

Tom Mckay says he and his staff will always do their best to deliver fast, friendly service and look forward to seeing Moose Jaw and area motorists in the future.

"Come on down to the shop and get to know me.  I'm usually here three days a week and I spend three days a week up in the Prince Albert store.  I look forward to meeting all the people in Moose Jaw.  We're season ticket holders for the Moose Jaw Warriors so hopefully, we can get through this COVID-19 pandemic and we'll get back in the seats."
