Colby Fleury readies for the snap during Moose Jaw High School Football action last season.

This portion of our Moose Jaw High School Football League preview takes us to the southernmost team in the league, where we get a look at the Estevan Elecs, who are heading into their fourth year in the league.  The Elecs had their best season in 2011, going 2-4 to finish in fourth place.

This year they have a new head coach as Mark Schott takes over the program from Marco Ricci and Schott says he's hoping to build on the progress Ricci made going forward this season.

"The transition has been great and we've got some new coaches in this year," explained Schott.  "Marco and I are very similar coaches, you could say we're both players coaches.  We like to build that rapport and that relationship with the players, instill that sense of confidence, and I think it leads to greater success along the way."

Schott says we shouldn't expect too much to change about the Elecs coming into the 2012 season, "We're going to be a team that plays hard, plays to the whistle and is willing to give all that it takes to come out on top once the game is over."

The two wins last season were the first ones for the young program that joined the Moose Jaw league in 2009 and Schott says this year they have their eyes set on finishing above .500, "The strides that we made last year were huge and will be really big for us heading into the upcoming season, it gives the guys a good focus and a good drive to keep that success going."

The Elecs' offence should be sound as they will be getting back starting quarterback Colby Fleury this season.  He threw for 356 yards on 86 attempts last season.  Schott says they'll need other players to step up in their roles as well, "We have a good core at various positions returning and we're trying to supplement that right now with some new bodies surrounding them."

On defence, linebackers Issac Elder and Jeremy Godfree will be returning to a squad that forced 13 turnovers last season.

Estevan will open the season at home against their new league rivals the Weyburn Eagles coming up next Saturday.
