Peacock celebrates their 2010 City Championship.

Football fans, we’re just under a week away from seeing the 2011 Moose Jaw High School Football season hit the turf at Gutheridge Field.

The action kicks off on next Thursday with the two top teams from last year’s regular season going head-to-head when Vanier Vikings take on the Central Cyclones, 4:30pm.

The Vikings went 6-0 during the regular season before losing to the Peacock Tornadoes in the City final.  Central’s only two losses on last season came at the hands of Vanier and Peacock.

The second game of the day will go in Swift Current with the third year Estevan Elecs heading on the road to take on the Colts.

League commissioner Larry Segall says game prices will remain the same this season, “For high school students and adults it's two dollars for all the league games and once the playoffs roll around, it's three dollars.”

A season ticket can be picked up for seven dollars from all players and at the gate of the first game.

Segall adds that there weren’t many changes to the league from last year with no new rules and the same amount of teams.

“We've did have to shorten our schedule by a week, and that happens two out of three years because we have to play the (Provincial) semifinal,” said Segall.

“The winner of our league has to go into Regina and play the Regina 3A winner on Saturday, November 5th and then the winner of that goes to Saskatoon and play the Saskatoon 3A winner on Saturday, November 12th.”

There is plenty of buzz around the league this year as the Vikings return many of the starters from a year ago and Central will be trying out a new offence with former Saskatchewan Roughrider receiver Matt Dominguez coming in.

Segall says that was huge for the league, “To have anybody of that stature and with the experience that he brings, that can certainly only help Central.  They had a good coaching staff to begin with, but when you add somebody like Matt Dominguez, that just makes that coaching staff that much better.

“I know the players are going to have a blast playing for him.”

The first doubleheader at Gutheridge will be on Saturday, September 10th with Peacock hosting Swift Current and the Elecs coming in to face Vanier.

The rematch of the league final, between Vanier and Peacock, comes on Saturday, October 1st.
