It was a fourth straight loss for the Moose Jaw WINMAR AAA Warriors, as they fell 4-3 to the Battleford Stars on Sunday afternoon.

The Stars would sweep the Warriors in the two-game weekend series, with a 4-2 win on Saturday night.

Moose Jaw drops to 3-5-0-2 with the loss and remain in ninth place in the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League standings.

Ryder Knutson and Connor Miller led the team offensively with two points apiece. Knutson had a goal and an assist, while Miller had two assists and extended his point streak to 10 games.

Caleb Potter and Liam Fitzpatrick were the other goal scores for Moose Jaw.

Ryan Bain made 28 saves in the loss in his eighth appearance of the season. His counterpart Matthew Ofukany stopped 33 of 36 shots for his third win of the season.

As did Saturday’s game, Moose Jaw came out firing with three shots in the first 40 seconds of the game including a post by Miller.

It was the Stars who jumped out to the 1-0 lead late in the first period. Ayden Belanger would jump on the rebound and cash in on the powerplay.

Battleford had the edge in shots after 20 minutes 19-10.

The WINMAR Warriors would claw their way back in the second period and take the lead in the second period. It all would start with Knutson taking the cross-ice feed from Brennan Brown and buried glove side on Ofukany to tie the game 1-1. Kanyan Unger would pick up an assist on the goal.

Just over two minutes later Caleb Potter would give the visitors the lead on the powerplay. On a three-on-two Knutson would fire it off the glass and then right onto the stick of Potter who put it into the wide-open net. Knutson and Miller would grab the assists on the goal and the Warriors took the 2-1 lead.

But back came the Stars once again. Minutes after the Warriors would take the lead Tyce Penrod would beat Bain and tie the game at 2-2 on the powerplay. Just over two minutes later Ayden Belanger would grab his second goal of the game to give the home side the 3-2 lead into the second intermission.

Shots after the second period were 26-18 in favour of the Stars.

Moose Jaw would do what they could to tie the game, but Battleford capitalized and took a two-goal lead with just over nine minutes left in the game.

Austin Shepard would walk off the goal line and find a hole under the glove of Bain to make it 4-2.

The Warriors didn’t give up though and after several scoring chances throughout the game, Liam Fitzpatrick was able to bury one. Off the faceoff Miller would get the puck to Fitzpatrick at the top of the faceoff dot and he would roof it over the blocker of Ofukany to put Moose Jaw within one at 4-3.

That’s as far as the Warriors would get as they were unable to tie the game on a late powerplay and with the goalie pulled couldn’t find the equalizer losing 4-3.

The final shots of goal were 36-32 for Moose Jaw.

Moose Jaw will look to snap their four-game skid on Tuesday as they travel west to Swift Current to battle the third-place Legionnaires. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at the Innovation Plex.
