There’s a big meet on the way next week for a pair of local swimmers.

Rainer and Cadence Olson will be heading to the 2017 North American Indigenous Games in Toronto where they look to bring home some hardware against top swimmers from Canada and the United States.

“I’m pretty excited for it, I’m looking forward to the new experience in Toronto and hoping to do pretty well,” said 14-year-old Rainer Olson earlier this month as he prepared for the games.

This will be the first international meet for the two members of the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Flying Fins swim team.

Rainer is heading into the meet confident with how he’s swimming after some strong performances throughout the season leading up to the Indigenous Games.

“Saskatchewan has done pretty well in previous years at the event, so I’m hoping to bring home a few medals,” he said.

“My coaches have been training us very well and my training should be enough to compete.”

Both Rainer and Cadence Olson will leave for the event this weekend and hit the pool next Thursday and Friday at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.

Flying Fins Win Seven Medals in Winnipeg

The Flying Fins sent eight swimmers to the 2017 Manitoba/Saskatchewan AA Provincial Championship this past weekend where they competed against 440 swimmers from across Western Canada and Ontario.

Elyssa Tacchi had an outstanding event, bringing home gold in the Female 13-14 50-metre breaststroke and picking up a silver in the 100m breaststroke.

Danael Liew also claimed a silver medal in the Male 13-and-under 50m breaststroke, shaving 0.65 seconds off his personal best time.

Liew was also a part of the Male 13-and-under Saskatchewan relay team, which won gold.

Cadence Johns just recently moved up to the Female 13-14 division and was able to win four bronze medals at the meet. Her best swim was the 200m individual medley where she took 3.64 seconds off her best time.

She also won medals in the 100m and 200m backstroke and the 400m IM.

Johns and Tacchi hit the pool again with the Female 13-14 relay team, which captured silver.

Erica Zinn was named the Flying Fins top swimmer of the meet in her first AA provincial championship as she swam 100-percent personal best times, including taking 11.33 seconds off her time in the Female 12-and-under 200m backstroke.

Quinn Barber, Chloe Johns, Reese Koch and Elizabeth Murphy all swam in the meet for the Flying Fins as well.
