Everything was clicking for the Moose Jaw Bantam A Mavericks over the weekend at the Brandon Female Hockey Challenge in Manitoba.

The Mavericks scored 18 goals and allowed just one over four games to walk away with the tournament title after posting a perfect 4-0 record. The Midget Mavericks also came away from the tournament as champions on the weekend.

“All the girls played very, very strong, obviously defensively, we were very solid, only allowing one goal in four games and our offence kicked in and we put 18 of them in the net, so all-in-all, it was a really good weekend and the girls played really well,” said Mike Botterill, head coach of the Bantam Mavericks.

It’s been a stellar start to the year for the Mavericks, but Botterill said that they just took it to another level during the four games in Brandon.

“We had some pretty good games against some strong rivals,” said Botterill. “Confidence-wise, this weekend was a boost for the girls, knowing that they can beat Yorkton and we played very well against Estevan, who’s also in our league and strong.”

Moose Jaw opened the tournament with a 7-0 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday morning, led by a hat trick and six points from Makayla Anderson. They then followed that up with another shutout win on Friday night, topping the Estevan Chargers 4-0. Crystal Wale had two goals and three points in the win, while Brooke Archer was in goal for both shutouts.

The Mavericks met up with the South Saskatchewan Female Hockey League’s top team in the final round robin game on Saturday afternoon, knocking off the Yorkton Crushers, 4-1.

Tia Miller scored early in the first period to give Moose Jaw a lead and then Wale and Lindsay Daniel potted goals in the second to put the Mavericks up 3-1 after two. Anderson scored in the third to seal the win.

“The girls were pretty pumped up about that one, that was a sweet victory,” said Botterill. The Crushers had beat the Mavericks in a pair of one-goal games at the start of the month, which are the only losses this season for Moose Jaw.

In the final, the Mavericks took out the Wheat Kings, 3-0, in their second game of the tournament.

“We started off pretty slow, there was no score after the first period, but our goalie really held us in, it could have been going the other way for Brandon, but she made some really good saves in the first period to keep us in the game and then we found some scoring touch later in the game to put them away,” said Botterill.

Archer picked up another shutout in the final, while Wale had two goals and three points to pace the offence.

The Mavericks will return to the ice on Friday at the Kinsmen Arena to host the Regina Cougars, who are riding a five-game winning streak, and then they welcome in the Chargers on Saturday at the Bert Hunt Arena.

The Midget Mavericks are back in league play on Wednesday night when they head to Wilcox to face the Notre Dame Hounds, puck drops at 5:45 p.m.
