Monday night the Rotary Club of Moose Jaw Wakamow hosted their Rotary Global Service Awards 2017 at the Heritage Inn.

This was chance to recognize citizens from our city who accepted awards for their hard work with local and international peace, understanding and humanitarian efforts.

Members of the Moose Jaw International Medical Mission, Nadia Al-Rawe, along with Linda and Ron Francis were all celebrated at the event.

Absent was Dr. Ali Cadili and Evelyn Nelson and Sommer Amare accepted for Nadia Al-Rawe.

Here's a synopsis of why each recipient was selected, submitted by the Rotary Club of Moose Jaw Wakamow:

The Moose Jaw International Medical Mission is composed in part of Jackie Wilson, Dr. Ali Cadili, Evelyn Nelson and Melissa McNeil. This group travelled to Patzun, Gautemala in February 2016 and again this year and voluntarily performed free surgical procedures on individuals who don’t have access to general health care. In addition they also helped out at an orphanage that accommodates 45 children.

Nadia Al-Rawe was a most important link in the successful accommodation of 20 new Syrian refugee families in Moose Jaw in 2016. She voluntarily offered assistance to “I Will Help Moose Jaw” using her unique ability to speak many dialects of Arabic. She called the families every day to make sure they had what they needed, helped solve problems and obtained countless donated items and delivered them.

Ron and Linda Francis are volunteers with the Moose Jaw Multi Cultural Council and have been working with the Syrian newcomers to Moose Jaw. They have given countless hours of their time to moving families with their truck and trailer, building relationships with families and introducing them to Canadian culture while all the while making sure these families understand that their culture is welcomed in Canada too.
