The Moose Jaw Major AAA Millers have kicked off their 2017 season over the past few weeks and that included their first trip to a tournament in Medicine Hat last weekend.

The Millers went 1-3 at the tournament with a lot of runs scored in the four games, but Head Coach Tony Dreger said their defence ended up holding them back from more victories, however that’s something that can be corrected with more time on the field.

“Overall, we hit the ball pretty good and pitched well, but we definitely need to work on our fielding and cut our errors down,” he said.

“As it gets a little bit warmer out and we’re practicing more and more, and looking at what we need to work on, evidently we know now that one of the things that we need work on is cutting those errors down and getting stronger on the defensive side.”

Moose Jaw opened the tournament with a 14-6 loss to the Medicine Hat Thrashers last Friday and then dropped a 19-13 game to the Medicine Hat Hustle in their first game on Saturday.

They rebounded after that to beat Lethbridge 17-4, but then fell to Swift Current, 9-8, on Sunday to end the tournament.

In a good sign, the Millers were able to learn from their mistakes quickly and bounced back with two wins in league play this week, beating the Regina D-Backs, 9-8, on Monday and then picking up a 22-4 win on Wednesday.

Dreger said the team is definitely learning and progressing, “I always say to the boys that every game we need to work on getting better and better right until we get to playoffs, so we’re on our way through that process now.”

The Millers will be in Regina for a tournament this weekend.
