The Moose Jaw Mallards haven't quite had the season they were hoping for, but they're looking to finish it on a high note this weekend.

The local squad is heading to Yorkton for the Baseball Saskatchewan Bantam AA Provincial Championship, starting on Friday.

The Mallards are coming off a 'B' side win at a tournament in Melville in which they went 3-2 during the weekend. That's built up their confidence and they're hoping to keep the momentum rolling into provincials.

“We're not overconfident, but we're going in there with a positive attitude, that's for sure,” said head coach Dave Helland.

“Our season started off a little slow, but we're getting better everyday and winning that 'B' side of that tournament sure put a lot of smiles on their faces and built up their confidence quite a bit, so it was good.”

The Mallards will be in a pool with the Humboldt Dodgers, Weyburn Beavers, Saskatoon Scrub Jays and Lloydminster Twins at provincials. Helland said that they've know some of the teams pretty well going in.

“There's a few teams in our pool that we've beat this year, so that's an added confidence booster for the team,” he said. “There's a few that we haven't seen but you're going to get that at a provincial tournament.

“We should be okay. If we pitch well, hit well and field well, we'll compete with anybody.”

Their offence will be the biggest key, according to Helland.

“We've got to come out hitting the ball,” he said. “Prior to this past month, that was our problem, leaving a lot of guys on base at key times, so if we come out hitting the ball and cut down on the errors, we'll compete.”

The Mallards open provincials against Humboldt on Friday morning at 10:30am. They will also take on Weyburn on the opening day at 3:30pm.

They have just one game on Saturday, facing Saskatoon at 6:00pm and then they finish the round robin on Sunday against Lloydminster at 12:00pm.

The gold medal game is on Sunday at 3:00pm.
