There will be a bit of a Colorado flavour to the Moose Jaw Miller Express’ roster in 2017.

The local Western Major Baseball League club announced the addition of five Colorado products on Tuesday, including Ben Dalke, Pate Katechis, Scott Platt, Mitchell Robinson and Travis Edgar.

All five players are expected to be impact players this season for the Millers.

“We’re expecting them to come in and dominate the league, that’s what we hope with every player, but these guys in particular,” said Head Coach Michael Hunt.

Katechis, Platt, Robinson and Edgar all played this spring with the University of Nebraska-Kearney, that familiarity should serve them well as they travel up to Canada for the summer.

“That’s a nice little transition for them as that they are already know some people when they’re coming up here, it makes it a little bit easier,” said Hunt.

Katechis (OF, 6-foot, 205 pounds) posted a .262 batting average with 12 doubles, four home runs and 25 RBI in 44 games this season with the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

“Pate brings a huge arm for the outfield and a showcase power bat to go with it,” said Hunt on the Longmont, Colorado product. “He’s a difference maker on both sides of the ball and will fit in nicely in the middle of the batting order.”

Platt (INF, 5-foot-11, 185 pounds) is also from Longmont, Colorado and in 29 games this season with the University of Nebraska-Kearney, he hit .229 with seven doubles and 13 RBI.

“Scott is a versatile middle infielder, he can start at either short or second base, and play in the outfield if needed,” said Hunt.

Hunt added that both Katechis and Platt fit into the type of player that they look for when building their roster each summer.

“They’re gritty guys that fit that mould that I’ve put in place over the last eight years,” said Hunt.

Robinson (RHP, 6-foot-1, 165 pounds) appeared in 14 games this season, starting 13, and posted a 4-7 record that included three complete games. In 84.2 innings, he had a 6.38 earned run average with 53 strikeouts and just 17 walks.

“Mitchell has been at the top of their rotation his whole (college) career,” said Hunt.

Edgar (RHP, 6-foot-5, 225 pounds) posted a 0-2 record in 12 games this season. In eight innings, he had ten strikeouts, eight walks and a 16.88 ERA.

“They’re big arm guys, they’ve got some velocity and they know how to pitch,” said Hunt. “They’re guys that we’re counting on to come in and be leaders in their own right and have some fun while they’re doing it.”

Dalke (6-foot-4, 205 pounds) will fill a duel role for the Millers this summer as he can play at both first base and pitch. He red-shirted this season with Central Missouri after injuring his knee last season.

“He was a guy that we were expecting big things out of last year, but unfortunately, he had a pretty significant knee injury and wasn’t able to come up for the summer, but he’s an impact guy on both sides of the ball,” said Hunt.

“He will be a two-way player for us, serving as an alternate closer and occupying first base. The former Colby (Community College) Trojan will also reunite with Jeremy Stidham to create the heart of the batting order.”

The Millers will open their season on June 1 in Swift Current. Their home opener is the next night when they host the Weyburn Beavers at Ross Wells Park.
