Just a few days before the 2017 CFL Draft, Moose Jaw’s Michael Stefanovic has removed himself from the draft pool of players after a possible positive doping test.

According to CFL.ca, the violation of the CFL’s anti-doping rules has not yet been confirmed and Stefanovic is appealing the test.

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport announced on Thursday that the University of Regina Rams linebacker suffered an anti-doping rule violation in a sample collected at the CFL Western Regional Combine in March that showed the presence of drostanolone, which is a prohibited anabolic steroid.

“At this point, Stefanovic does not have an anti-doping rule violation, but has been provisionally suspended in accordance with the CADP until the matter has been resolved by an independent arbitrator,” stated the media release.

Tanya Reynoldson, interim director of athletics at the U of R stated in a media release, “Obviously, we are extremely concerned that one of our student-athletes has tested positive for anabolic steroids. While the adverse analytical finding is discouraging and we await the final outcome, we will continue to make significant efforts to educate our student-athletes about the consequences of using performance-enhancing substances.”

On Thursday, the CFL deferred the draft year for five other players to 2018 for anti-doping rule violations.

The 2017 CFL Draft goes on Sunday at 5 p.m.
