Saturday was a good day for the Saskatchewan Rush.

The Rush clinched first place in the West Division thanks to their 15-10 win over the Toronto Rock at SaskTel Centre, which gives them a first round bye in the NLL’s Champions Cup playoffs.

The win also was the 122nd in the career of head coach Derek Keenan, moving him into first place all-time.

“It’s a nice milestone,” said Keenan after the game. “In the second half, we really eliminated the mistakes and were mentally and physically focused. We really played hard and I think we wore them down.”

Mark Matthews had four goals and seven points to pace the attack offensively, while Robert Church had two goals and five assists.

Tyler Carlson made the surprise start in goal for the Rush, turning away 40 shots to pick-up the win in place of regular starter Aaron Bold.

“It’s a huge win. It’s awesome to clinch first, but it’s more important that we got the 122nd win for Coach Keenan. It’s an honour to play for him,” said Carlson.

Saturday’s win came in front of a sold-out crowd of 15,045 at SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon and the Rush will now get home court advantage in the best-of-three West Final. They finish the regular season with an 8-1 mark at home.

The game was back-and-forth in the first half with the Rush opening with goals from McIntosh and Matthews in the opening 3:03, but Toronto struck for four straight goals to take a 4-2 lead after one.

Saskatchewan battled back in the second quarter with five goals, including a pair of power play markers from Church to tie the game at 7-7 after two. Dan Taylor, Matt Hossack and Matthews also scored in the second frame.

A dominant third quarter ended up being the difference for the Rush as they outscored the Rock 5-0 in the frame with two goals coming from Adam Jones and Ryan Keenan, McIntosh and Hossack chipping to put the Rush in front 12-7.

Matthews scored twice in the fourth quarter to help the Rush seal the win. Curtis Knight also scored in the frame.

Tom Schreiber led the Rock with two goals and six points in the loss, while Brett Hickey had four goals and five points.

Both teams fired 50 shots on goal in the game, while the Rush went 5-for-7 on the power play.

Saskatchewan will finish the regular season with two games this week. They head to Denver to face the Colorado Mammoth on Friday and then travel to Calgary to take on the Roughnecks on Saturday.
