There are a few concerned citizens in the Friendly City after a number of needles have been found on the south side of the city in alleyways.

Moose Jaw Deputy Fire Chief Mike Russell, says that if you find a needle on the ground, don't pick it up.

"We kind of advise the public not to touch them. If public works comes across them or parks crews come across them they're trained to pick them up, and they will pick them up and dispose of them."

Russell says the best course to take is to call someone.

"They can phone 9-1-1. Right now it's a joint effort, but we've been doing it increasingly more and more right now. If it's a capable adult what we tell people and what we train people is obviously don't pick them up by your hands, pick them up with a tool and put it in some type of container like a pop bottle, or we use containers that are provided, and then the pharmacies take them."

Although there have been a few needles found and disposed of properly, Russell says that there’s no reason to panic.

"I don’t want people to be alarmed - it's not a big issue right now; it's not like we're going through an overabundance of these type of calls. They are still infrequent and we don’t want people to be alarmed by them, but like I said we also want the public to know that we don’t want kids picking them up. If they do see them, call for some type of resource and we will make sure they're attended to."
